There is so much stuff happening there. Think about their encounter with the goblins, with the wolfs, with the bear-man. I thought first that the second part should start when they are about to enter Mirkwood. The real reason, of course, is to double the studio's take and to "continue the franchise" — the modern popular cinema's mantra, if ever it had one! But their doing away with the idea of this "bridge film" is certainly welcome news.
