In recent memory I can think of only this movie and _The Da Vinci Code_ being addressed in bulletins and from the pulpit.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2239062544101975016.post-60735373182073171342008-02-27T18:18:00.000-08:002008-02-27T18:18:00.000-08:00I too enjoyed THE GOLDEN COMPASS -- a good, but no...I too enjoyed THE GOLDEN COMPASS -- a good, but not a great, film. Disappointing mainly because with a good cast and talented production folks they missed the chance to deliver a film as good as the book -- not from a lack of ability but a lack of will. The decision to gut the film's message left us with only a lightweight adventure story. All the more ironic because those who object to Pullman condemned the film sight unseen, while those who would have supported a more faithful adaptation saw no reason to do so with Pullman-lite.

The idea that 'very many Catholic church bulletins, and even . . . some homilies' warned parishioners against the film is news to me -- is this a regular practice re. books, films, &c., or is this case an exception?

In any case, since New Line perceives the film as a financial failure, it's now unlikely that any more of the story will get filmed for a generation or so, when someone else will probably have another go. I do expect the dvds to do well, though -- more in line with the overseas sales rather than the U.S. box office.

--JDRJohn D. Hope they complete the series.Vinnyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17431019698541377093noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2239062544101975016.post-14215846372086463382008-02-23T06:02:00.000-08:002008-02-23T06:02:00.000-08:00I can speak from personal experience that millions...I can speak from personal experience that millions upon millions of _Catholics_ were aware of the Catholic League's/the Church's objections, as they were made known in very many Catholic church bulletins, and even in some homilies. So don't discount their effect on the film's gross quite so readily. (Nonetheless, I agree that the film flopped _primarily_ because it wasn't a very good film, not because of any protest.)

CarlAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
